The World Cup and Learning to Let Go for Happiness

The 18th World Cup was enjoyable. Behind the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup is the second most universal event. The world unites every four year when the Olympics air, while the world divides every four years when the soccer World Cup airs.

It’s all about pride, glory, and bragging rights as nations compete in the most universal sport. It can be insulting when people from other countries brag about how their country’s team defeated yours! Pride and a love for sport has sparked me to write this as I saw my beloved Australian Socceroos bow out of the World Cup after their best ever result.

Since the World Cup started in 1930 at Uruguay, Australia qualified for the event in 1974 where they lost every match remaining goalless the entire event. Early in 2006, Australia’s streets were empty and there was silence through out the nation as they versed Uruguay for a place in the 2006 World Cup. We qualified for the second time in history after defeating Uruguay in a chair-gripping penalty shoot-out. The silence was shattered as every patriot, sport-loving Aussie, roared in happiness.

Tim Cahill broke Australia’s goalless World Cup history when he scored a double against Japan to lead his country to their first victory in the event. On top of the world, the Socceroos versed Brazil and were defeated 0-2 in what well known sport commentators referred to as a match Australia outplayed the number one soccer nation. After drawing with Croatia and moving into the second round of the World Cup, Australia faced soccer giants Italy.

The second round match kicked off and remained goalless for 92 minutes. In the 92nd minute and 50th second, with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Italian Fabio Grosso dribbled the ball into the penalty box. Australian Lucas Neill went to the ground as he tried to tackle the Italian, but a second later Fabio tripped (or FELL!) over the Australian defender. The referee, who shall remain nameless to preserve what little safety he has left, awarded the free kick. Francesco Totti then made a lovely penalty shot to qualify Italy into the quarter-finals and to remove every Australian’s dream of a World Cup quarter-final birth.

So why have I lectured you on a nation’s soccer history you probably don’t care at all about?

A few days after experiencing my nation’s dramatic soccer loss, I felt hopeless, empty, with a tonne of frustration and anger. I take my international sporting events seriously.

I know I’m being overly expressive about it all, but there are vital life lessons that you need to learn. I was aware of these lessons before experiencing my ‘soccer outburst’ but everyone needs to be frequently reminded of them.

Life, or soccer in my case, gets the better of us most of the time. We let past experiences attach onto our backs and into our minds pulling our current actions and thoughts backwards. Our past experiences hold us back.

What I’m talking about is ‘letting go’ or ‘moving on’.

It is often either a control issue: something bad happened that negatively affects your life and you desire to influence it. You live in a false sense of hope and control wishing or thinking you could have changed the problem.
Or
It is problem focused: the problem persists in your mind causing lingering pain simply because you focus on the problem and it remains until you are able to let it go and move on.

My beloved Socceroos would have faced the control issue. In the last 10 seconds in what has taken over 76 years to happen, a harsh call was made and they were removed from the competition. 39 972 106 minutes had passed since the first World Cup and the last 10 seconds determined the end result. The last 10 seconds! I’d calculated the time since the first World Cup to the penalty shoot because this is essentially the opportunity the Socceroos have had for World Cup success.

Whether the call was right or not is beyond my point here. It is a harsh world. I couldn’t agree more with “the worst thing, will happen at the worst time”. The Socceroos, namely Lucas Neill, would be asking themselves “what if… what if this happened? What if another referee was in the game? What if I had done this?” I guarantee they would have been living in a false sense of control thinking about what they could have done to prevent the loss from occurring by not letting go of history. They are after all, only humans.

I on the other hand, was problem focused. The Socceroos had a superb World Cup and gained the respect as a soccer nation. But no! I complained and whinged for days, unable to move on. Argh! The game was 0-0 until the last 10 seconds! You can learn not only from my focus on the bad result, but also the pain I endured because I did not let go of the past.

Even if you think it’s funny because I take the World Cup seriously, try and relate to how you dwell on bad results and don’t let go of the past.

There’s no way Australia is going into the quarter-finals so why have a little sulk about it? Remember the saying “there’s no point crying over spilt milk”? I’m sure you would have heard of the saying before but we let our emotions overpower our logic, dominating our commonsense that history cannot be changed. Heck, I know this well and truly yet Australia bowing out of the World Cup infuriated me for days. We all need to be frequently reminded that history is exactly history. Nothing can be done about the past.

What you do need to take from the past is the lessons you learn. It would be foolish to make a mistake, endure the pain, and learn nothing from it to prevent the same problem from occurring again. I’m sure the Socceroos and all other soccer nations have learned from their World Cup experience.

What you don’t need is to take the past with you by not letting go. An examples is not forgiving someone for the pain they’ve caused you. You are willing to cling onto the unhappiness and pain of a past problem by not forgiving the person that hurt you.

You live in truth and happiness by accepting what you can currently control through living in the present and letting go of the past. Nothing good happens with an unhealthy bondage to past negative events.

It’s time to let go of the past that’s been holding you back from living a full and happy life. Don’t be afraid or lazy to comeback and read this as you’re guaranteed to let your emotions dominate your logic and let the past control your happiness again and again. Let go of the past and live in happiness.

I’m now happy for Italy and congratulate them in qualifying for the quarter-finals. The worst possible call from an Aussie’s point of view was made at the worst time. The Socceroos didn’t make it and I accept that. Well done Italy.

American Football vs European Football

American football is usually confused with European football. The difference between the two is greatly, but the same use of title can confuse others. The difference between American and European football is simple by definition. Football is used mostly with the hands to control the ball, and the European football is what most people call Soccer. In soccer, you kick the ball and they not allowed using their hands at all. By definition, football is when 11 players on a rectangular field 100 yards long. Teams try to steal/keep possession of the ball and move across the field to the other teams goal line by running a series of plays. European football or soccer is a game played with a round ball (not diamond shaped like American football).

Again, two teams of eleven players user their body to control the ball to pass the opponents goal line. Soccer is played dominantly with the feet, but can be controlled by other parts of the body like knees, chest, and head. They can use any part of their body by their arms and hands. If they do use the hands, a foul is called the other team gets control of the situation. They only people who are allowed to use their hands are the goalkeepers.

Many soccer games are played on football fields. They are set up the same way except instead of having a huge goal post, they use two goal nets (much like hockey). The games are in quarters that are times. There are four quarters per game and a half time. Usually there are only a minute or two pauses between quarters and the half time is much longer. Soccer games usually do not take as much time as soccer, because there are fewer rules to soccer.

Football is a complicated sport that has flags and penalties for, what seems everything. In soccer, penalties are called but mostly for being offsides or out of bounds. Sportsmanship is a problem in both sports. The two sports are very competitive and can be frustrating to the players. Even though you are not allowed to tackle a player purposely in soccer, some players do tend to collide and when they do, they hit hard.

Soccer and football are much alike in some aspects, but are completely different in others. Either way you look at it, the two sports are just as aggressive and competitive and can be very enjoyable to watch and play.

The History of Football

For as long as football (soccer) has been around, football fans have also been around. The most significant consequence: it is appreciated that the football World Cup gathers the second greatest number of viewers, after the Olympics. For instance, the World competition of 2006 brought together more than three million spectators, and these were only those who got the chance of a seat in the stadiums. Just imagine the number of those who gathered around a TV in order to watch the matches; how useful free football online would have been! And the case of the World Cup is not singular; other football tournaments have their own faithful fans and viewers, many of whom would surely be grateful for the occasion of watching their favorite teams in action while the matches are broadcasted live. Fortunately, the latest improvements in live broadcasting allow football fans to watch live and free soccer online. Obviously, the reasons why free football online has been made possible are closely related to the popularity of this particular kind of sports event.

Football (or soccer) has not always been as popular as it is these days – and it is exceptionally popular since free soccer online is considered. Although the so called “games with a ball” (resembling football) have a long history, it was only during the second half of the 19th century that the birth of football was registered. England is the location where soccer, as we know it today (with a few minor changes), was officially born. Surely, there are stories relating that, approximately three thousand years ago, a game named “Kemari” played with a ball filled with sand was widely practiced in Japan. It did resemble football, but the number of the players on the field was only eight and even less at times. The same, it is estimated that in China, around the epoch of 2500 B.C., a game named “tsu chu”, played to pay homage to the emperor, developed up until the interval of 230 B.C.-220 A.D. The game involved a number of players trying to stop one another from kicking a stuffed ball (presumably, it was stuffed with feathers) through an opening between two bamboo stems.

However, the Football Association, the one which is “responsible” for the commencement of the game then called “Association football”, was established only as late as 1863, in London. The origins of English soccer can be identified back in the Middle Ages, when a type of mob football was practiced, as a competition between villages or towns. The purpose was to bring a ball at the central public square of the village/town of the opponents. While the game was very popular, it was also very violent, since very few play rules had been established. As a consequence, the first royal ban (by King Edward II) on the practice of this game was registered at the middle of the 14th century. The bans were maintained for the next three centuries; nonetheless, the game was still practiced. We can be sure that by 1863 a number of more accurate play rules had been adopted (in fact, 17 years earlier the first play regulations had been written down). The label of “soccer” was coined in the 1880s, and it is an abbreviation from “association”. Nowadays, Americans use the term widely so as to distinguish soccer from American football.

When the second half of the 20th century came (and along with it came the media), soccer began being popularized worldwide. The first World Cups had already taken place (ever since 1930) and the fans began swelling their numbers so that today the need to cover their demands (as spectators) by every legal means possible – and free football online is one of these means – is exploited at the maximum. Unfortunately, not all football fans allow a monthly subscription to rather costly satellite broadcasted programs in order to watch live their favorite matches.

Free soccer online is one of the alternative methods of saying that the history of football is still in the making. And it is in the making because it gives the fair share to football fans. This is what the option for free football online actually says: since the fans are those who have turned football into one of widespread and best-liked sports all throughout the world, then it is the fans who deserve their reward. Free football online is the result of the game’s popularity and the advancements in technology. Practically, anyone who has an Internet connection can be the beneficiary of free football online. And you do not lose anything from the live broadcasts, since Internet speed is the chief guarantee of a broadcast obeying every decent rule concerning quality and promptness of the transmission.

Additionally, free soccer online can cover an impressive variety of football matches. All you have to do in order to enjoy in the best possible manner your registration for free soccer online programs is to find the proper guide with the help of which you can decide on and select according to your own taste the matches you want to watch. In the end, the opportunities offered by free soccer online programs are the next expected step in the history of football, namely the stage where various means are employed so as to make sure that the fans who have kept football alive for such a long time are fully content. To what concerns the rest of the football events, i.e. victories or losses, it is only a matter of the players’ skills.

Sports and World Peace

Like baseball, basketball is one of America’s favorite pastimes. The evening the Houston Rockets won the NBA Championship in 1995, the streets of Houston were packed with throngs of people and seemed to be a common thread amongst everyone no matter their race, color or creed…. that commonality was sports. It didn’t matter if they weren’t really basketball fans; they were fans of being winners and that night, we were all winners.

There is something going on in Iraq right now that reminds me of that nostalgic moment: Operation Soccer Ball. Apparently the Iraqi people, particularly the Iraqi children, are passionate about soccer. Actually, it’s football to them, but we call it soccer. You could equate their passion for the game of soccer to our love of football or baseball. Any street, field, farm, or dusty ground off the side of the road is a veritable soccer field in Iraq. From reports of soldiers overseas, Iraqis are all passionately chasing some form or fashion of a soccer ball. If they don’t have a soccer ball, they’ll use anything as a substitute – even a rock – and play with it like they were playing for the World Championship.

Iraqis need soccer balls, and whoever started Operation Soccer Ball, in my opinion, is brilliant. It was started as a way to convey the goodwill of America and American soldiers by giving Iraqi children soccer balls that they so desperately desire.

The love of sports, in this case being soccer, is starting to become an instrument of peace and is forming a common bond between the US and the Middle East. It’s transcending cultural differences and language barriers and it’s also mitigating the aggravated feelings of some Iraqis that would rather not see US presence in their land.

I found out about Operation Soccer Ball from a local radio station in Tampa Bay — WQYK. They contacted my company, PostcardMania, to print posters promoting Operation Soccer Ball in an effort to raise money for the cause and enable soccer balls be sent to soldiers in three different locations in Iraq. The purpose of the mission was to solidify relationships with the future leaders of Iraq by giving soccer balls out to the Iraqi children.

The program actually started in Tampa by a woman named Gina McDowell whose son, PFC McDowell, is serving in the Army Reserves presently stationed in Al Hillah, Iraq. He is part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team attached to the United States State Department. Gina came up with the idea of collecting soccer balls when her son told her the impact they had on Iraqi children. She then contacted WQYK to help spread the word and aid in the collection. Operation Soccer Ball was run through the local VFW. (There may be other programs like this around the country.) And PostcardMania printed the posters — pro-bono. We do lots of pro-bono work for charities and recently started doing more for the military. We were contacted this past summer to help USO Georgia by printing 18,000 postcards for a large deployment of American troops so they’d have postcards to write home to their families on one last time before boarding their plane on their journey to the Iraq and Afghanistan.

Well, I got a letter the other day that Operation Soccer Ball was a big success — over $8000 was raised for the project and all the monies went directly to the cause which enabled WQYK to collect over 3500 soccer balls and enough money to ship them (it costs close to $2 to ship each ball!). One interesting note that really stood out was that after being befriended with a soccer ball, some Iraqi children have risked their own safety by disclosing the whereabouts of numerous IEDs (explosive devices) and insurgents to our soldiers. Wow. It’s amazing to me that a small gesture of a soccer ball can impact so many lives.

It’s the pleasure in life, or even the contemplation of pleasure, that enriches our lives. For some it could be a trip to the Bahamas. For others, it could be a stroll down memory lane with an old friend…or the love of a good game of basketball. But for the Iraqis, it’s the game of soccer. And a lot of good people are creating a safer haven in the worn-torn Middle East with just a few balls – who’d have thought?

Michael, a soldier in Iraq who has a blog on the net, cited some Kiowa pilots from the 1st Cavalry Division that had been dropping soccer balls from their helicopters after completing their missions. One story in particular really struck a chord.

“I remember this one time when we came down, ready to drop a few balls and we see this kid standing off in the distance. He had his arm cocked back to his ear, just ready to hurl a rock at us. I pulled one of the balls out and tossed it to him. The kid just stood there for a second, like he really wasn’t sure what to do, but then he dropped that rock, grabbed the ball and gave us the thumbs up. That was cool.” –Chief Warrant Officer Sonny Hinchman, Kiowa pilot.

The Tampa Bay program has ended but hopefully this story will inspire others across the nation to develop similar initiatives in their cities. More corporations can get involved by donating soccer balls — monetary donations or donations of the soccer balls themselves with possibly a company logo on each ball. What a great way to get exposure and positive publicity after donating a few thousand balls. Even big conglomerates like Nike, Microsoft or even city governments like NY, Atlanta, Houston or Tampa Bay can get on the bandwagon. Heck – let’s rain soccer balls instead of bullets. Who knows, we might just have the next World Champion Soccer Team on our Hands: Team Iraq.

Short Sided Round Robin Format For Basketball And Soccer

A garage organizer system is extremely important to make sure that your garage stays clean and well organized. There is no more important part of your house than your garage. Therefore, why do so many home owners find their garage to be the messiest portion of the home? The reason is that, because it’s is so big, they feel they are a liberty to dump all their unwanted possessions there in order to clean up the rest of their house.
Unfortunately, the garage is usually the area that your visitors will see first upon arriving. You know you need to get it organized…but how? Here are some simple yet incredible effective tools and tips that will enable you to keep your garage organized and looking spotless.
First of all, as with any organizational endeavor, whether it be your closet, cabinet, etc, discard any items you will not be using. Most people’s organizational problems stem from their inability or unwillingness to get rid of items they know they will not be using. They tell themselves that they might use the item again at some point.
However, that day never arrives. Leave nothing untouched. If you don’t believe you will be using the item within the next year or so, get rid of it immediately!
The next step is to repair cracks in the garage walls. Wall cracks can cause the garage, even an otherwise clean one, to appear disorganized and messy. This should be done only after discarding your unneeded items.
Third, use hooks on the walls. This is especially useful for your bigger items such as chairs, bikes, shovels, etc. Quite simply, unless you own a huge garage with an endless amount of space to put your larger times, it is necessary to put most of them above the ground to make room for the rest of your inventory. This will instantly give you far more room in your garage than you ever dreamed possible.
Any items that need to be repaired should be done so immediately. There is nothing more wasteful than to allow broken or unusable items to sit around the garage floor for long periods of time. For instance, if your bike needs to be fixed, instead of letting it sit around taking up space, immediately take it to the shop and have it repaired. If your items need to be kept in the garage, they had better serve a good purpose.
Clutter is always the result of indecision You do not know what to do with your belongings, and therefore they get left around the garage instead of being put where they should. The most important thing when it comes to de-cluttering your garage is to make a decision and stick with it.
If you are sure that you will be using an item in the near future, then by all means keep it. However, if you know that you won’t be using an item but decide to keep it anyway, you will never get your garage or your life under control.
The most important thing to remember is that, once your garage is in order, you must keep following this system or it will get out of hand again very quickly. Every time you find another item that you know you won’t be using, instead of putting it in the garage, throw it out.
If you do this each and every time you come across such an item, the mess will not accumulate in the first place and you will never again be faced with a big clean-up job again. Follow this garage organizer system, and you will quickly find that it’s easier than ever to organize your garage and your house in general.

Soccer – England Missed the Chance for the European Championship 2008

After last Wednesday home defeat against Croatia; it is now a fact the European Championship 2008 in Switzerland and Austria will be carried out without the English football motherland. Croatia won by 2:3; goals by Niko Krancjar (9th minute) as well as by the national league professionals Ivica Olic (14th) and Mladen Petric (77th). The fans who shared the thrill with England in the Wembley Stadium were visibly disappointed about the lousy performance of the English national team and Coach Steve McClaren. Superstar David Beckham as well could barely believe the practically unimaginable happening. ”This was disastrous for the whole country“, was his comment in regards to the loss.

The team won a total of twelve games, lost three and tied two games. The team accumulated 23 points, just one point less than the surprising second place Russia. Since only the first two in each group can qualify for the European Championship; England will have to stay home next year. Due to Croatia’s victory it was possible for Russia, that also achieved a victory against Andorra to reach the second place. If England would have won they would be in advantage by the points.

After the unexpected disappointing; England‘s Coach McClaren will be dismissed immediately. He took the place of the national coach after the World Cup 2006 when the former coach Sven-Göran Eriksson from Sweden left the team after the publication of confidential utterances.

For only a short period of 15 months there hasn’t been anyone else coaching the national team for such a short time. Throughout the qualification rounds and by making big mistakes such missing penalties England achieved the image of the EURO-2008-Loser. With this image the players Beckham, Gerrard and Co. will probably have to deal with for a long time. ”This was the worst evening for the national team. It will keep hurting for quite a while”, complained Steven Gerrard.

The last games of the qualification round have already taken place so all 16 participants for the 13th European Championship 2008 already stand firm. Already qualified are: Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Spain and Turkey. Since Austria and Switzerland are the event hosts these two teams are automatically qualified.

In group D the Czech Republic could achieve the first place. The German team which finished their last group match against Wales with an unsatisfied 0:0 kept the second place. Thereby; they also have an advantage, they will not end up in the feared lottery pot of the raffle for the preliminaries. There are always the hosts, the title holder, “Greece”, and the team with the year’s best coefficient, the Netherlands.

Choosing the Right Soccer Cleats

Comfort is the most important factor by far. Choose a boot that has a slightly tight fit when buying because they’ll expand overtime. There should be a gap of 7mm-10mm between the longest toe and boot material. Also, choose a pair appropriate to your foot type. Some boots are more suitable for narrow feet and some are best for wide feet. If you’re not sure about your foot type, have your feet assessed by an expert.

Playing surfaces range from soft ground, firm ground, hard ground, Astroturf and indoors. An extension in the model name (SG, FG,HG, TF, IN) indicates the most suitable playing surface. What determines the suitability is of course, the studs. SG boots will have round studs which are best for soft or wet playing surfaces. HG and FG have ‘bladed’ studs, best for dry and hard surfaces. Astroturf boots have many rubber studs and indoor boots might not have studs at all. The wrong usage of boots can lead to drop of performance, reduced life span of boots and/or injuries.

Some boots enhance your performance in a particular area more than others. Find out which of your playing attributes you’d like to enhance . Be it first touch, accuracy, speed, swerve etc. there’s always a boot which helps you improve on any particular aspect(s).

The higher your level of play, the more hi-tech your boots should be. If you’re playing on a lower level or play recreationally, you wouldn’t want to waste a lot of money on high end boots.

With football boots, you get what you pay for. The more technology incorporated into them, the higher the price. But do remember that higher-priced boots are not necessarily better.

Style is not the most important of aspects, but you do want to look stylish.

Shop for boots in the afternoon. This is the time when your feet’s volume are maximum.

Get recommendations from others who’ve used a particular boot before. You won’t get the feeling of playing on a football pitch by running around the store.

Do some research before buying. Don’t let store owners rip you off. Read the reviews posted on websites, blogs and magazines.

If you want high-tech boots without the expensive price tag, go for the predecessors of current high end boots.

Shop online. You’ll have more choices and might get better deals.

Once you’ve made the purchase, DO remember to break them in.
