Child Obesity in America
The epidemic of child obesity in America seems to have never been more prevalent than it is today. Even with all of the media attention on the increase in weight and the decline of activity of children all across our country, not enough seems to be happening to make the differences that the next generation needs to see. What is even more frightening is that we don’t need the television or obesity statistics to know that the problem isn’t going away; we can see it in our neighborhoods and sometimes in our own households.
There is hope. Education is key; education for parents, teachers, and the community, but also education for the kids. The more we all know, the easier it will be to create a change.
In working with men, women, and children as a Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, and Youth Sports Instructor over the past decade, I have seen the highs and the lows of fitness in America. Having been witness to some of those lows, I can still see a light at the end of the tunnel, but what’s more important is that the children see that light.
Know what? They do.
So, what can we do as individuals to start making a difference in the lives of children that may be suffering from childhood obesity?
Here are 4 Helpful Hints for Fighting Child Obesity in America
Be Supportive: When we least expect it, children are listening. Whether they seem mesmerized or distracted by the television, their iPods, or their cell phones our words, both positive and negative, stick. They will begin to model or try to become what they think you think of them.
If your consistent message is “you are overweight and all you do is sit in front of the TV all day”, then that is what they will eventually emulate. Positive reinforcement like, “You looked so fast running from the school bus to the front door today. I bet that’s why you’re doing so well in soccer,” is a great way to stimulate the activity you would like to see more of.
Lead by Example: My parents have always been my greatest heroes. Some of my favorite childhood memories were of playing baseball and soccer in the front yard, basketball in the driveway, or just racing my Mom and Dad up and down the street. It didn’t occur to me until years later how much of an impact that had on me growing up and is probably part of the reason that I’m writing this today. Thanks Mom and Dad!
Talk about It: Kids and adults browse through magazines, read newspapers, and watch the television daily. Look for your coaching opportunities. If a news clip comes on that focuses on child obesity in America, ask your kids for their thoughts. You may be surprised to find that their knowledge of the subject matter is more detailed than you originally thought. What’s even better? They may have some great ideas on stopping childhood obesity.
Never Stop Learning: If you have found this site, then you are already on the right track and it is obvious that you care about making a difference. The more you can learn about obesity for yourself, your friends, and your family, the more you can do to help stop it. Whether you are looking for new physical activities or games to play outside with the family, if it’s trying some new, healthy recipes, or getting involved in community education, the more knowledge you have, the more you will be able to share.
Thank you for joining the cause to stop child obesity in America and across the world. You may also learn more about our weight loss programs to continue making a difference in your life and in the lives of others.
Starting Your Own Soccer Jersey Collection
It’s one thing to be a big supporter for your own soccer team, but it’s a whole different case when you become obsessed with the entire sport. Amazingly, fans like those exist and are growing more in both number and in their degree of obsession. Aside from living, breathing and talking soccer, they collect all the merchandise they can get their hands on. It’s those people that have managed to develop their own individual soccer jersey collection. Sure, each soccer-centric shop may have its own wide range of jersey selections available for purchase, but truly dedicated fans put a lot of effort into tracking down even the extremely rare jerseys just to add the shirts to their growing collections. It is not simply a competition between fans, but instead more a hobby, as well as another manner of expressing their love for soccer. If you want to have your own soccer jersey museum, there are many ways to do so.
Collections are found both in shops and also compiled in fans’ homes. What they all have in common is that they are always up on display. A fan does not usually hide their own collection, and a store will always exhibit their available jerseys. What you have to keep your eye on are the actual stores that will be supplying the jerseys you so desperately want. In order to do this, locate a store that stocks up on jerseys immediately. Such shops may be found in your area or through online searches. Fans’ own soccer jersey collections are not there to be envied, instead being mostly used as a basis for comparison.
When forming your own collection, it is ideal to be specific about what you are collecting. Soccer jerseys come in all shapes, sizes and team colors, and you should be sure of the jerseys you want to collect. Are you collecting team jerseys for one league or for many? Are you collecting individual player jerseys, too? Questions like those should be answered before beginning your collection, so you will be aware of the estimated costs of your new hobby.
You must also be able to foresee the consequences of starting your own collection. Collecting as a hobby is, in general, quite costly. People often collect things, believing that later on they will be worth a lot more because of their rarity. However, having a collection of something with values that rise astronomically over time is not a common case, and is definitely not a good reason to begin a collection. If you have funds to spare, and if you believe that collecting jerseys will give you satisfaction, then feel free to go out and start jersey hunting!
Aside from buying the shirts themselves, you must also consider the cost of maintaining them. Shirts can easily become dusty, and therefore must be routinely cleaned and pressed, especially if you want them displayed. By having your own soccer jersey collection, you can match the entire product line of an online store, and compare your own collection to other fans’. It may not mean you will be the biggest soccer fan in the world, but your dedication to the sport will shine.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to Throw Party to Beckham
Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes are throwing a party to welcome their close friends David and Victoria Beckham to America. The Hollywood couple is tying-up party details with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith to organise the bash to welcome them at their place at Los Angeles on coming Saturday (July 21, 2007)
A New York Post newspaper was informed by a reliable source that the invitation cards printed on red velvet with tacky gold lettering have already been sent out to all invitees all over Hollywood. This, it reported, was made in honour of David, the Spice Girl Victoria, their three sons – Brooklyn, eight, Romeo, four, and two-year-old Cruz – who had arrived in Los Angeles last Thursday (July 12, 2007). The couple moved to America after soccer star David signed to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy team. Victoria, 33, said recently: “We are all so excited about moving. The boys actually think they’re moving to Disneyland!”
Cruise and Holmes, it is learnt, are presently staying in Berlin, Germany, with one-year-old daughter Suri. Tom Cruise is in the city of Berlin busy filming new movie, ‘Valkyrie’, a World War II episode. The movie story revolves around the historical plot of a failed attempt to assassinate Hitler. Tom is playing Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who is the mastermind behind the plot.
The news of Tom Cruise and Will Smith to play the chief hosts in the Beckham bash is circulating fast. It is finally decided that Tom Cruise and Will Smith will be hosting a celebrity-packed party to welcome the soccer superstar David Beckham and his wife Victoria, commonly known as a Spice Girl, to Los Angeles on Sunday, the 22nd of July 2007. David Beckhams’ family had already arrived in California on thursday last, ahead of David’s upcoming debut for local soccer team L.A. Galaxy, set to take place on Saturday, the 21st of July, but this is conditional to his recovery from an ankle injury in time.
Tom, Smith, Family friends, and others will host Sunday’s party comprising nearly 600 guests at the Museum Of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary in downtown Los Angeles. George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Jim Carrey, Steven Spielberg, Anjelica Huston, David Geffen and Jerry Bruckheimer are among the prominent guests expected to attend the most talked about bash.
A Look at Uk Soccer
The FA Premier League Partnership, also known as UK soccer, was first founded in 1992 and is a league that is reserved for the top UK soccer clubs in the English system. This distinction makes it England’s primary soccer competition. Each year, 20 teams compete for the league championship but, oddly enough, only four teams have been crowned. Why? Because these four teams have dominated UK soccer since it’s inception. These include Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea and Manchester United. Of these four UK soccer clubs, Manchester United has been the most successful after having won the championship title on eight occasions. The current league champions are Chelsea, who clinched their second consecutive title during the 2005-06 season.
The sport of UK soccer hasn’t always been as popular as it is today. In fact, the 1980s marked a particularly low point for the sport. Stadiums were crumbling, which left spectators facing poor facilities. As attendance dropped and conditions worsened, UK soccer was banned from European competition. By the time the 1990s rolled around, things were beginning to change and the ban formerly preventing English teams from competing was lifted.
At the conclusion of the 1991 season, a proposal for a new league was presented and was one that would bring additional revenue into the sport. The Founder Members Agreement, which was signed in July 1991, established the basic foundation for the FA Premier League. The new division was given a license to negotiate broadcast and sponsorship agreements, which was a necessary part of successful competition. In 1992, the FA Premier League was formed as a limited company and operated out of an office at the former headquarters of the Football Association.
The 1992-93 season marked the first of many competitions for the new face of UK soccer. Due to the rules governed by the FIFA, the number of teams was reduced to twenty in 1995. Today, the FA Premier League is a corporation that is owned by the 20 member clubs of UK soccer. Each team is considered to be a shareholder and has the opportunity to vote on important issues, including rule changes and contracts. Each team has the power to elect a Chairman, Chief Executive and Board of Directors to oversee their day-to-day activities. The Football Association is not directly involved with these operations, but it does have veto power during team elections.
Today, a typical UK soccer season consists of 20 teams competing against one another on two separate occasions. One half of the season is dedicated to home games and the second half, which repeats the same schedule as the first, entails each team playing their competitors for a second time at a different location. For instance, the first half of a season may be comprised of home games and the second half would be played on the competitors home turf. At the conclusion of each season, the champions are named according to points awarded throughout the season. If a tie occurs, a one match playoff is held to determine which top four teams will qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
For additional information on the FA Premier League and/or UK soccer, fans may visit their official website at http://www.premierleague.com . Current standings, news, updates, photos, historical profiles and league news is available online. A professional design with colorful appeal make this a very popular website among UK soccer fans. Soccer, itself, remains a popular sport throughout the world and is celebrated in many different countries. With legions of fans worldwide, it appears that soccer players will be kicking high for many years to come.

World Cup comes to Africa!!
After years of being named the “dark continent” the world cup is about to land in one of the greatest continents in the world. Call it what you may but AFRICA IS DAMN GREAT!! The people are great, especially with their unity in diversity. Their culture is splendid. Most people perceive the Africans as being backward due to their culture (especially their skin clothing) but in contrast, they the most intellectual people in this world. So lets leave that and focus on the world cup.
Finally, the great names in world class football will be in this great continent. The likes of Kaka, Torres, Fabregas, Rooney, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovich, Raul, Henry, Ika Casillas to mention but a few, will be coming to Africa. Let us not forget the African bred footballers: the likes of Diouf, Drogba, Etoo, Kalou and the African footballer of 2008 Adebayor.
So there is much to be expected. The stadiums are in top gear preparation. Roads are being re-carpeted, hotels are being constructed and upgraded plus many other things in preparing the world for the most watched and televised international event.
The question then is are you ready for this? Start saving up early! With the economic melt down going on you had better begin doing something early enough if you have to enjoy this phenomenal experience. You do not want to miss this. Over the next few months as a build up to the great occasion, we will analyze various players and their progress in the individual leagues, what to expect from them their expectations and their role in their national teams. After a couple of seasons as a solid top 10 outfit, Bournemouth flirted with possible relegation last term as they finished five points and four places above the bottom four. Another testing campaign looks to be in store for the coastal club following the departure of defender James O’Connor to Doncaster Rovers and depending on whether top goalscorer James Hayter remains at the club.
Manager Sean O’Driscoll has drafted in a few young players to boost the ranks, namely former Chelsea reserve and youth team captain Danny Hollands. The 20 year old made 10 appearances on loan for Torquay United earlier this year and signed a two year contract. Liverpool striker Conal Platt, Cardiff City midfielder Tareq Khalil and Walsall’s Daryl Taylor are also looking for an opportunity to shine at the Fitness First Stadium.
O’Driscoll will also welcome the news that defender Karl Broadhurst signed a new one year contract. He has made almost 200 appearances for the club and was the last of O’Driscoll’s out of contract players to re-sign. Broadhurst was club captain for much of the 2004/05 season but a back injury kept him on the sidelines for 12 months. He returned in February this year and made seven appearances as the season reached its conclusion.
Veteran striker Steve Fletcher has also signed a new one year contract to enter his fifteenth season as a Cherries player. He is now the club’s longest serving player following his switch from Hartlepool United in 1992 and has made over 500 appearances for the club.
O’Driscoll has taken several players on trial over the summer including former Everton striker Paul Hopkins, Luton Town striker Luke Maitlan, Ipswich Town defender Jack Haverson and Tooting & Mitcham left-back Craig Tanner.
Verdict
Bournemouth is a club that likes to give youth a chance and the youngsters will have to grow up quickly in order to stave off relegation this season. A lower mid table finish is the expected result.
Soccer Drills – the 4 Things You Must Know to Create Fun and Exciting Drills for Young Soccer Players
Every week around the world, millions of children go to soccer training ready and willing to learn, and excited about kicking a soccer ball around the park. This article will look at some of the challenges faced by their respective coaches in how to keep them interested, teach them new skills and let them have fun so that they turn up on game day ready to play. Soccer Drills should cater to children of different levels of abilities, they should be planned prior to the training session to address the needs of the children, they should help you foster good relationships with the parents by demonstrating your level of interest and knowledge, and they should teach the kids new skills in a positive manner. This article will introduce you to four vital concepts to help you to teach your players new skills by planning and utilising soccer drills in a fun and educational manner.
Anyone that has coached a children’s sporting team understands that players have differing levels of ability, and different physical statures. One of the great things about soccer is that large physical stature is not a prerequisite for success. The challenge for the soccer coach is that they will be dealing with children with different physical statures and different skill levels within the same team. Soccer drills must be adaptable to cater for these differences within the team. They must also offer extensions so that as players learn the skills they can be extended further.
It is always astounding to me when I talk to coaches of children’s’ sporting teams that many of them go to training without a clear plan of what will happen in the session. Failing to plan is planning to fail. A plan does not have to involve great detail but should be written down. How long does the session go for? How long do we warm up for? How long is spent doing soccer drills? How long is spent reviewing last weeks’ game? What were the strong points from the last game and what drills can I use to reinforce these? What areas do we need to improve and what soccer drills can I use to do this? Remember that it is OK to change your plan during the session, but if you don’t have a plan in place in the first place you are destined to have children that get bored. And we know what happens after they get bored!
How do you teach the children? This has a huge bearing on their confidence level and also on your relationship with the parents within your team. And rest assured if you maintain a positive relationship with the parents then this will make training the children alot more rewarding. Do you criticise? Do you yell? Do you point out the faults of the children? (And forget to mention when they do something wrong). Sounds terrible doesn’t it but sometimes we get so caught up in the emotion of the moment and what everyone else is doing that we forget about our own behaviour. It has been scientifically proven that children learn and improve many times more quickly with praise than with criticism. I found most successful the formula of 2 doses of praise for every dose of correction. When I found myself wanting to criticise I first made myself praise. I then offered correction, and I then praised again.
I once heard a coach say “I just wish the kids could learn what I am trying to teach them!!’ He was very frustrated at the time. What he failed to realise was that what he was trying to teach them was not appropriate for their stage of learning. So make sure your soccer drills are appropriated for your team, plan your sessions so they are fun and educational, and teach your children in a way that is positive and truthful. And at the end of the season your success is not measured by how many games you won. Your success is measured by how much your children learned, how much fun they had, and how many of them come back to play next year.
Driving Miss Dozy
Statistics are normally my trusted ally, but even close friends can occasionally fall out. Research claims to prove that men are over 50% more likely to be involved in a road accident than women, but thatâs probably because theyâve all been run over by dippy bints.
Only last weekend, the wifeâs vertiginous nature led to a particularly bad smash. Betty was seriously shaken up, but luckily, a Scientologist was quickly on the scene.
The incident would never have occurred if we lived in Saudi Arabia, as women are forbidden from driving by law. They must really respect their women to go to such lengths to keep them safe.
The Saudi ladies have many other social advantages. When Manchester United played their controversial testimonial in Riyadh, the women were all banned from the stadium; presumably to protect them from the shock of viewing Rooney and Tevez. I canât take my eyes off the 7/1 for a Tottenham win over a jetlagged United side.
While the Saudi women lead a life of luxury, the men are treated incredibly shabbily. Islamic law allows the males to marry up to four wives: so you can understand why a minority go apocalyptic. Iâd consider destroying the West if I had to watch Eastenders four times a week.
Itâs not all doom and gloom for the men, as multiple weddings equate to multiple stag nights. Itâs a little bit different over there though: it takes the stripper 25 minutes to whip out her elbows. There wonât be a Stag party when Mansfield face Middlesbrough, Southgateâs men will knock them out at a fundamentally sound 4/9.
Amy Winehouse can only look on in jealousy at the freedoms offered to the women of the Middle East. Amy canât even water her plants without being harassed by the man, although she has been overdoing it with the hosepipe lately. Iâll be having the craic with the 5/6 for a Derby win over Preston.
The footballing world has changed dramatically since Kevin Keegan last flexed his managerial muscle. The game is now awash with American cowboys, and in a sign of solidarity with our friendly-firing brothers, Joey Barton now walks like John Wayne. I wonât be backing Arsenal at 2/5 against Newcastle. The hell I wonât.
Liverpool v Havant & Waterlooville is what the FA Cup is all about: itâs a bunch of nobodies getting spanked by a decent team. Bookies are as short as 1/100 about a Liverpool win, Iâll play on the Reds -2.5 goals at a more punter friendly 1/2.
Wigan looked to have completed a canny piece of business with the signing of Wilson Palacios. The Honduran is nicknamed âHarry Potterâ, a moniker earned when his brother disappeared. 8/15 for a Chelsea win over Wigan will be vanishing soon.
Mark Hughes is definitely a kind-hearted soul. He went face to face with Gareth Southgate last week, and he resisted the urge to laugh. Iâll be smiling like a trout enthusiast around Leslie Ash when Aston Villa see off Blackburn at even money in the only Premier League fixture of the weekend.
Frankly, I was quite disturbed by the news that Leslie Ash pocketed £5m after contracting a bug while in hospital. Itâs not like Lee Chapman needs the money, he already owns a mobile exercise unit.
The controversial payout has led me to consider moving to the utopia that is Saudi Arabia. Naturally, this would lead to a conversion to Islam, which will conflict with my liberal beliefs. The wife would have to wear a veil though, so itâs swings and roundabouts. Aston Villa, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Southampton and Watford form a 10/1 weekend accer that will pay for the necessary amount of tarpaulin.
